Your Child’s First Dental Visit: What to Expect

Pediatric dentistry at Marsh Creek Dental in Brentwood, CA

Your child’s first dental visit sets the tone for a lifetime of healthy smiles. A calm, positive first experience helps children feel comfortable at the dentist and gives parents a chance to ask questions about teething, brushing, thumb sucking and cavity prevention. Here is what to expect and how to prepare.

When Should Your Child First See the Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association recommend a first dental visit by a child’s first birthday, or within six months after the first tooth appears. Early visits are short and focus on prevention, and they help catch problems such as early cavities before they become painful.

What Happens During the First Visit?

  • A friendly introduction. We take time to let your child get used to the room, the chair and the dental team.
  • A gentle exam. The dentist checks your child’s teeth, gums, jaw and bite. For very young children, this is often done with your child sitting on your lap.
  • Cleaning and fluoride, if appropriate. Depending on age, the visit may include a light cleaning and a fluoride treatment to help strengthen enamel.
  • Tips for parents. We cover brushing techniques, how much toothpaste to use, healthy snacks, bottle and sippy-cup habits, and what to expect as more teeth come in.

How to Prepare Your Child

  • Schedule the visit at a time of day when your child is usually rested and in a good mood.
  • Talk about the dentist in simple, positive words, and avoid words like “hurt” or “shot.”
  • Read a picture book or play “dentist” at home by counting your child’s teeth.
  • Bring a favorite toy or blanket for comfort.
  • Write down any questions you have about teething, habits or diet.

Why Baby Teeth Matter

Baby teeth hold space for permanent teeth, help children chew and speak clearly, and support healthy jaw development. Cavities in baby teeth can cause pain and infection and may affect the permanent teeth underneath. Regular checkups and good habits at home help prevent these problems.

What Comes After the First Visit?

Most children benefit from a checkup and dental cleaning about every six months. As permanent molars come in, around ages 6 and 12, your dentist may recommend dental sealants to help protect the chewing surfaces from cavities. Kids who play sports should also wear a mouth guard.
